3 Common Problems Caused by Poor Attic Ventilation

Attic ventilation is important in any roofing system as it keeps hot, humid air out of your indoor space. Without proper ventilation, you’ll be facing energy efficiency issues and moisture problems. Moisture can also pose health risks since moist environments promote the growth of molds.

In this post, roof replacement specialist Home Pro Exteriors lists three issues that typically result from poor attic ventilation.

1. Energy Efficiency and HVAC Problems

One of the problems you might face as a result of poor attic ventilation is reduced HVAC efficiency. Because your attic isn’t properly venting heat out, the trapped air has no choice but to transfer into your living spaces. This makes your indoor temperature high, which causes your HVAC system to work harder in order to combat the heat. Over time, this can lead to premature breakdown of HVAC components. On top of that, you’ll be paying higher electricity bills too due to your inefficient HVAC system.

2. Ice Dams

Ice dams are a common problem during winter. If not properly addressed, they can lead to expensive roof repair or replacement. When your roof has poor attic ventilation, the heat stays inside your attic for a longer time. This heat melts the bottom-most layer of the snow that settled on the top of your roof.  Once the snowmelt runs off toward your roof’s edge, it refreezes and accumulates. Ice dams prevent proper drainage and cause water to back up into your roof, which can, later on, result in leaks and moisture-related damage.

3. Mildew and Mold

A humid attic is a perfect place for mold and mildew to grow. The temperature in a poorly ventilated attic is ideal for these invasive growths to develop. And when they begin forming on building or roofing materials, they can produce more spores and damage a larger area. These spores are also a health hazard as they can cause allergic reactions to some people.
