4 Criteria for Choosing Among Gutter Replacement Options

Gutter replacement is an opportunity to upgrade and to correct installation mistakes. You may be missing out on various benefits by choosing a like-for-like replacement. Gutter and siding contractor Home Pro Exteriors lists the important criteria for choosing your new gutters.

  1. Sectional or Seamless — Traditional gutter systems are built from 10-foot galvanized steel sections. These sectional gutters are fastened at the seams using mechanical fasteners and sealed on the inside using silicone-based caulk. Seamless gutters, on the other hand, are built and shaped during installation from metal sheets with a single seamless length spanning the length of a roof edge. Seamless gutters generally require less maintenance as there are fewer seams where leaks and corrosion may form.

  1. Material — Consider different gutter materials other than galvanized steel. Aluminum is becoming one of the most popular materials for building new gutters thanks to its many advantages: it’s lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and available in a variety of factory-applied colors. Copper is another option that has an exceptionally long life span with the ability to develop a beautiful green patina over time. Roof repair contractors like us recommend pairing copper gutters with long-lasting roofs such as slate.

  1. Profile — Gutters are available in either K-style or half-round profiles. K-style gutters feature an angular design with a flat bottom that looks like crown molding when viewed from the ground. It can handle high rainfall rates, which makes it ideal for steeply sloped roofs. Half-round gutters, on the other hand, feature a U-shaped profile and is typically seen in traditional home styles.

  1. Other Factors — Other factors are taken into consideration by gutter contractors before the gutter specifications are finalized. Proper sizing is calculated using the roof area, roof slope and the average local rainfall in the area. Other components such as downspouts and gutter fasteners, as well as optional ones like gutter covers, follow once the gutter specifications are complete.
