Decoding the Sagging Roof Mystery

While sagging roofs aren’t as common as a leaking roof, for example, many roofers can attest to this problem being perennial. The trouble with a sagging roof can’t be traced back to a simple cause, as various factors can be a culprit—or even a combination of them.

In today’s post, Home Pro Exteriors, Inc., your trusted roof repair contractor, discusses three major causes of a sagging roof.

Wear and Tear

Old age is one of the primary reasons for a sagging roof, especially if the roof or the house (or both) is over 30 years old. While many roofs sag well before time, a majority of this problem’s occurrences can be attributed to normal wear and tear in the course of a roofing system’s life span.

It’s also worthwhile to note that the type of material of the roof is irrelevant, as sagging implies the weakening of the structural supports, not the outer layer of the roof. Needless to say, a sagging roof does need a full roof replacement

Weather-Related Causes

A roof can also sag because of the impact of weather. A particularly brutish storm can wreak havoc on your home, especially your roof if its pitch is higher than usual. If the roof encounters impact damage, such as from hail or falling tree branches, the roof may receive damage on its roof deck that can lead to a sagging roof—which sometimes leads to a collapse if left untended.

Additional Weight

Roofs are heavy, and any additional weight on top of it that the deck is not rated to support can break these supports—or bend them down. Some weight, however, can’t be avoided, such as a peculiar attic construction where its entire weight rests on the roof deck or even packed snow in winter. For the latter, though, simply raking them regularly can be a lifesaver. Simply put, avoid putting extra weight on your roof.
