Installation Quality

Large-head roofing nails that are long enough to protrude through sheathing will best secure your roof against the wind.

Age

Roof performance worsens as the roof ages because it gradually loses its protective granules and becomes brittle over time. Adhesive sections can begin to lose adherence over time as well, weakening the mechanical connection between shingle layers. Make sure your roof is regularly inspected and maintained so you’ll know when you need to replace your roof.

Materials

Shingles are classified based on their wind resistance. Generally, asphalt shingles on the market have a wind resistance classification as follows — ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H.

Geometry

Roofs with large overhangs build air pressure underneath, effectively decreasing their wind resistance. This is why high-pitched gable roofs with wide overhangs generally have lower wind resistance than four-sided hip roofs.
