Factors to Consider When Selecting Asphalt Shingle Colors

Asphalt shingle roofs are popular across the country because they’re an economical and reliable choice. Plus, they have various colors and styles to choose from. To determine the right color for your roof, here are some factors that you should consider in your decision.

Use the Same Colors as Before

If you’re happy with the current color of your roof, you can choose the same shade for your new shingles. Check your roofing documents to find out the manufacturer and specific color of your roof. If the shingle color has already been discontinued, you may want to look for the closest shade possible instead.

Know Your Local Climate

If your local area is often sunny and humid, you may want to steer clear of dark-colored asphalt shingles and use lighter ones that do a better job at reflecting sunlight. If you live in a colder region, darker shades may be more suitable since they’re known to absorb more heat.

Mind Your Home’s Existing Color Scheme

Your new asphalt shingle color must look good with the rest of your home’s exterior. For example, if you have a light gray house, a dark gray roof would be a smart choice. If you have a beige or cream house, it would look great with brown or warm gray shingles. If you plan on changing the color of your siding soon, it would be a good opportunity for you to create an entirely new color palette.

Get a Large Sample

Don’t base your color choices on digital photographs or small samples from the hardware store. Ask for a large sample and observe it under different lighting throughout the day. This would give you a better idea of how the shingles will look on your property.

Blend In With the Neighborhood

Generally, you should pick a shingle color that goes well with the other roof colors in your neighborhood. If you live in an HOA community, you will likely be choosing from pre-approved roof colors. Check with your HOA board and ensure your new roof complies with the rules.
