Fiberglass VS Organic-Mat Asphalt Shingles

Fiberglass and organic are the two types of asphalt shingles. They both have an asphalt exterior and are available in architectural or three-tab styles. Asphalt roofing shingles can last for decades when properly maintained.

Find out the difference between fiberglass and organic-mat asphalt shingles from Home Pro Exteriors, your local roofing contractor

Fiberglass Asphalt Shingles

Fiberglass shingles have a fiberglass mat, which is highly resistant to tearing and splitting. This mat doesn’t absorb moisture so it won’t distort over time. They are easier to transport and install since they are lightweight, which may also affect the installation cost. This type of asphalt shingle provides better fire-resistance than organic-mat. Fiberglass shingles contain less asphalt, making them environmentally-friendly.

They last long and come in a wide range of colors and styles. These shingles are one of the most economical options for roof replacement. They are less likely to crack or dent due to foot traffic.

Organic-Mat Asphalt Shingles

Organic asphalt shingles are also known as traditional felt mat asphalt shingles. Like fiberglass, they are cost-effective, available in various colors and styles and long-lasting. With more asphalt content, they perform well even in extreme weather conditions. They are recommended for cold climates or harsh winters.

The organic components of these shingles are integrated into a mat, which is then saturated with asphalt. After that, granules are embedded on top of the mat for protection against harmful ultraviolet rays. Volatile compounds are added to asphalt to make shingles more flexible, waterproof and durable.
