Skylight Cleaning and Maintenance: A Quick and Simple Guide

Like any other feature in your home, the skylight needs regular maintenance for it to function properly while also extending its life span. Keep in mind, however, that it is installed out of reach. For this job, you’ll be using a ladder, scaffolding, or other equipment to help you reach elevated places. Be sure to follow all equipment manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation and use fall protection when applicable.

Home Pro Exteriors, Inc., your local roof replacement company, offers a simple how-to guide to skylight cleaning and maintenance.

Exterior Inspection and Cleaning

Leaves, dirt and other debris often accumulate around the skylight’s exterior cladding, so remove them right away for rainwater to flow freely. Also, check if all the exposed fasteners are secure and if there are signs of excessive wear or scratches on the cladding’s finish. Replace the cladding if it is damaged; otherwise, you can clean this component using a mild soapy water solution.

Cleaning the Glass Panes

Begin by soaking the glass with soapy water to loosen dirt and debris. Then, use a non-abrasive glass cleaner along with a soft brush to clean the glass further. Wipe the solution using a non-metal squeegee, a soft, clean, lint-free cloth, non-abrasive sponge, or chamois leather. To ensure the best results, skylight and roof repair pros recommend not cleaning the skylight glass during the hottest part of the day to prevent water spots.

Interior Cleaning

Interior skylight frames can be cleaned using a damp cloth or mild, soapy water if there’s dirt on it. If the frames are made of prefinished wood, you have the option to apply a fresh coat of finish and paint. Be sure to keep varnish or paint off of the skylight’s gaskets and glass. If it’s unfinished wood, consider painting, staining, or varnishing it within six months of installation.
