Top 3 Signs You Need Better Roofing Ventilation

A strong and efficient roof is critical to any home or building. It effectively wards off damaging elements, such as snow and hail, and keeps the interiors cozy and well insulated. This is why it is important to maintain your roof in its tip-top shape. One of the many roofing issues to watch out for is poor ventilation, which can lead to damaged shingles, condensation and mildew growth. In this article, a roofing contractor reveals some telltale signs you need better roofing ventilation.

1. Deteriorating Insulation

Good insulation is a standard feature in modern homes. If your attic is not properly ventilated, the fibrous absorbent insulation will soak up and collect moisture, causing your system to degrade a lot faster than it is supposed to. If you notice your insulation failing, it may be caused by excess moisture trapped in the attic space.

2. Damaged Shingles

If you see that your relatively new shingles are buckling, warping, or cracking, it can inculcate that the roof temperature is too high. It can also be a sign that there is trapped moisture underneath the shingles. Improper ventilation is often the main culprit of these instances. Be sure to install sufficient insulation to keep it in good condition for many years to come and avoid an early roof replacement.

3. Excessive Moisture

A well-ventilated attic should remain dry. Warm, moist air from normal household chores, such as cooking and showering, rises into the attic. The attic ventilation should push that air out and let it travel outside. Without adequate ventilation, the moisture will get trapped in the attic, creating an environment where mold and mildew can thrive.
