Why Does Asphalt Shingle Curling Happen?

Over the years, it has been proven that asphalt shingles are a worthy expense when it comes to your roof replacement or installation project. Aside from its affordability and recyclability, this material made of fiberglass or felt paper base coated with a waterproof layer of asphalt with ceramic granules is guaranteed to be resilient and customizable. They have been a common choice for most western contractors and homeowners because of their durability. However, these also come with their problems, such as curling. Today, we’ll share how and why this happens.

Why Do Asphalt Shingles Curl?

Experts note that curled shingles will occur more often near or around the shingle tab edges. The damage can sometimes occur at the lower edge and on both sides of the shingle tab. Some of the most common causes behind curled shingles include:

  • Poor Installation. This is one of the primary factors you can look out for. This suggests that it is possible that your roofer did not use the recommended amount of nails or placed them in the wrong spots. Never forget that working with an experienced roofing company to avoid curled shingles and a host of other problems is critical.
  • Roof Overlay. Shingles are prone to curling because of the multiple layers on your roof. Sometimes, a siding and roofing company will opt to lay a second roof on top of the old one to save you money. This roofing job doesn’t last as long as an entirely replaced roof and can affect its inner structure. It may be cheaper than a complete replacement, but this also means you’re leaving your old roof intact. The new layer of shingles won’t be installed securely when this occurs, making them more susceptible to curling.
  • Moisture Buildup. Excessive heat from the sun and heat rising into your attic or crawl space can cause your shingles to curl and shrink, nails to pop, and weak areas to form. This is primarily driven by inadequate roof ventilation and your roof decking absorbing excess moisture when installed or replaced.
  • Old Age. If you have an outdated and failing system, curled shingles can occur due to wear and tear. Have your roof replaced before more severe damage happens.
