Vinyl Siding: The Most Eco-Friendly Siding Option

“Plastic” and “eco-friendly” don’t always go in the same sentence. But according to the Vinyl Siding Institute’s recent BEESr eport, vinyl siding has a superior Environmental Impact Score (EIS) compared to other siding materials. In this blog, Home Pro Exteriors shares an in-depth look at what makes siding an eco-friendly siding option.

Eco-Friendly Qualities

BEES, or Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability, is a software developed by the Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It is used for measuring exterior material life cycles and used by the Vinyl Siding Institute (VIS) to analyze various siding materials, including cedar board, fiber cement and brick. According to the BEES report, vinyl siding has certain qualities that actually has a positive environmental impact. Its relatively light weight allows more material to be packed per shipment, resulting in better fuel efficiency and a smaller carbon footprint.

As an extruded material, vinyl can be cut to custom lengths during manufacture. This means it is possible for a siding and roof replacement contractor to install new siding with virtually zero new waste material. The extrusion process also means vinyl siding has colors molded-in, which eliminates scraping and repainting. This reduces the need to use potentially harmful paint, as well as helps you save on repainting costs.

The Other Advantages of Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding has other eco-friendly advantages that weren’t mentioned in the report. For instance, one of its main features is its low maintenance requirements. All you need is water, a soft brush and some plant-friendly dish soap of your choice. No harsh or harmful chemicals or power tools needed.

Vinyl is also suitable for recycling. In fact, many of today’s vinyl products, from phonograph records to children’s toys, contain recycled content. Lastly, its inherent resistance to rot and corrosion gives it a relatively long life span. Combined with its recyclability, a vinyl siding replacement project has minimal impact on the local landfill.
