Why Vinyl Siding Is More Sustainable Than Other Claddings

A recent Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES) study discovered that vinyl and insulated vinyl siding have better Environmental Impact Score than other exterior materials. The study used 11 impact categories to determine areas where vinyl siding is eco-friendlier than other claddings.

In this post, your local roof repair expert, Home Pro Exteriors, discusses how vinyl and insulated vinyl siding has a lower environmental impact compared to other materials.

Vinyl VS Other Claddings

The Vinyl Siding Institute says that vinyl and insulated vinyl siding have significantly lower impacts than fiber cement in all environmental impact category. The average vinyl siding is just 19 percent of average fiber cement’s ozone depletion impact and 21 percent of fiber cement’s global warming impact.

Compared to cedar board, vinyl siding has lower impacts in ozone depletion, smog, global warming, acidification, eutrophication and non-carcinogenic categories. The category where vinyl performs better than cedar is the eutrophication, with only 13 percent impact.

Vinyl siding has lower impacts than brick and mortar in every category except for the primary energy demand-renewable category. Opposed to brick and mortar, vinyl siding excels in the smog category.
